The prejudicial cynicism of sexism has, without a doubt, been a problem in our
society that cannot seem to be shaken. It appalls me that women are looked at
in a particular light that ultimately is degrading and inferior. It is hard to
place blame because sexism is a trend that has evolved over the years. I
understand that ideas that were once considered fashionable in one's household
are now the ideas that many look at as repugnant. However, I cannot bring
myself to understand why those ideas were placed as a standard at the
forefront. Why is it that men so repeatedly get the upper hand? Why is it
that men today are viewed as generally more successful, more powerful and more
intelligent? Sexism in the past was detectable, yet reserved. The traditional
roles of men and women were usually not questioned and there was a hierarchy of
needs that seemed to somehow always get met. Honestly, women today don't want
to deal with it. We don't want to be told that we can't hold a six-digit
salary, or that engineering and automotive repairs are for "real men." Sure,
many women would rather be shopping and vacationing. But many may not. It is
wrong to make an assumption based on opinion, and that is exactly what our
world tends to do. In the same respect, women don't want to be expected to have
dinner on the table or the laundry washed, folded and put right away, either.
As minute as some of these tasks may seem, they are increasingly becoming more
prevalent as the issue of sexism fails to dissipate. You can't find a solution
to an issue such as this, for its main origination lies in the thoughts of the
close-minded. The only way to minimize sexism in our world, is to recognize it
is a problem, and as women, do our very best to shatter the façade that most
men see on a daily basis.
To trace the prejudice of sexism, you need to focus on the ancient views of
women, as told by renowned philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle. Saint
