Salve Regina University's department of business studies and economics sponsored "It's more than a Game: Exploring Opportunities in the Business of Sports", an event held Friday Feb. 9 in the O'Hare Academic Center in Bazarsky Lecture Hall and was open to all salve students.
The keynote speaker was Raymond Mey, a former FBI agent and Salve Regina parent. Other speakers included Jayne Mullen-Samson, VP of Marketing for FLOORGraphics Inc., Mary Ellen Curren, a Sports Marketing Consultant, and Michael Thibault, head coach of the Connecticut Sun.
The Keynote address highlighted Mey's lifelong passion for sports and how he incorporated it into his 22 years of service at the FBI. Mey worked to help plan events like Olympics and keep them safe from terrorism. He protected the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Turino, Italy. His daughter Valerie Mey, a senior marketing major at Salve hopes to find work in sports event planning like her father.
This was followed by a quick break in Jazzman's Café where there was food and coffee for all to enjoy. Nikolas Pizza donated over 30 pies.
Students then were invited into breakout sessions held in classrooms. These sessions were lead by the guest speakers and were tailored to specific topics. The sessions were 'Building a Team on and off the Court' led by Thibault, 'The ABC's of the FBI' by Mey, and 'The Ins and Outs of Sports Event Management' by Curren and Mullen-Samson. The sessions were scheduled to run for 45 minutes but much later as students enthusiastically participated.
This is the 2nd consecutive year that the event was held. It helped to provide information to students interested taking their passion for sports into their career.
"Sports helped Catapult my success" said Mey advice that students like sophomore Ashley Gouin was glad to hear.
Gouin, a marketing major, attended the lecture for her sports management class. She sat in on the 'Jumping through Hoops: The Ins and Outs of Sports Event Management' breakout session. It was her favorite part of the event.
"It was great and very informative, it really helped me to start my career planning," Gouin said. Gouin played sports like cross country, track and field. She also played and coached indoor track, experiences that she says have taught her invaluable teamwork skills and leadership abilities. These values she hopes to bring into her future marketing career.
