A First Month Check-In on Salve’s Newest Students

By: Alani E. Gebon | Staff Writer

Hey Seahawks!

We made it through September; one month down of the next 4 years of our lives! Given the occasion, I decided to seek out some of my fellow freshmen and ask them some questions about their experience so far. Below are the questions I asked:

1. What’s your major and do you enjoy the program?
2. What is your best memory so far or your favorite part of being at Salve?
3. What is the biggest culture shock you’ve had since starting college?
4. What is your favorite spot on or around campus and why?
5. What is one word or quote to sum up these last 4 weeks?

Olivia, New Jersey
“Peace and Love -Catherine McAuley”
Olivia is a criminal justice major and greatly enjoys her program so far. Olivia’s favorite memory of the last month is getting to jump off the rocks and swim by Forty Steps. Furthermore, she shared some of the biggest surprises she’s had here: getting to have ice cream whenever you want at Miley Dining Hall, Rhode Island pizza, the lack of speeding by Newport drivers. Lastly, she told us her favorite spot on campus is downstairs in Miley where she gets to play pool, chat, listen to music, and do homework, while having the added bonus of being close to Starbucks.

Adriana, New York
“Engaging”
Adriana is in the exploratory program here at Salve, and she appreciates all the opportunities she has to explore potential majors. Her favorite memory so far has been getting to see the Boat Show in Downtown Newport earlier this month, but she also loves getting to talk to local residents. Adriana shared with me that she is surprised by the amount of privacy she gets in college, the welcoming and caring nature of her professors, and the amount of campus events. Her favorite spot on campus is McKillop Library, particularly the second floor as she claims it’s the perfect place to “lock in” with friends.

Bella, Connecticut
“Hectic, different, worth it”
Bella is a secondary education and literature major and is enjoying her program; particularly how it allows her to study abroad and have a very organized 4-year plan. Her favorite memory at Salve so far has been booking an appointment to play with Ruggles in O’Hare. She was also pretty shocked by the food quality, the demanding course load, and going to a co-ed school. Bella shared a couple favorite spots including McKillop to study, her dorm, and Forty Steps. She enjoys being outside with the calming ocean and having the option to swim.

Sadie, Connecticut
“Fun new experiences”
Sadie is a political science major and loves how interesting the program is and how much she is learning. Her favorite part about Salve is being so close to downtown Newport and being able to go in and explore the area. She was also surprised by the amount of money she’s spent and the food quality; however the amount of walking she’s done and lack of sleep she’s had also came as a shock to her. Finally, Sadie loves the Cliff Walk as it’s super peaceful location to sit by the ocean.

Ruth, Montana
“Self-Discovery”
Ruth is a criminal justice and criminology major, she enjoys how straightforward and interesting her program is and shares she’s a fan of her criminal justice professor, Dr. Joyce. Ruth’s favorite part so far at Salve is how close we are to the rocks as she enjoys searching for sea glass often. She shared that she was surprised by sales tax, which does not exist in her state. Like many other Salve students, her favorite spot is the Cliff Walk as she didn’t grow up around water and likes being close to the beautiful view.

Paul, New York
“5 Star Review”
Paul is a political science major who enjoys the program and is very interested in studying the foundations of America and law. His favorite part about Salve is getting to be in a beautiful city, having a different experience, and how nice everybody is. Paul stated that slang was the biggest culture shock here, and how differently people talk based on their state. His favorite spot on campus is downstairs in Miley where he enjoys to play pool.

Jameson, New Hampshire
“Adventure”
Jameson is a musical theatre and dance major and loves the supportive faculty and how helpful and kind his classmates are. His favorite part so far has been going into Downtown Newport with his friends to grab Starbucks and do some shopping. Jameson says that college is a big adjustment as is being away from his home and hometown friends, and he shares he was surprised that he has a lot more free time now that he’s in college. Like many other Seahawks, his favorite spot on campus is McKillop as he likes being able to get work done but in a social space.

Kyle, Vermont
“Fun and Different”
Kyle is a business administration and finance major who enjoys the teachers in his programs and their convenient office hours. His favorite part of Salve has been being on the football team, as he has great coaches and teammates. As for culture shocks he shared that he was only really surprised by the amount of people on campus, as he came from a much smaller school. Kyle’s favorite place is Wally’s Wieners because they have great food and service, and he has some fond memories there.

Jesper, Germany
“Litty”
Jesper is a mechanical engineering major and thinks the program is very fun. He shared that his favorite part of Salve was getting to meet new people and make new friends. Jesper expressed surprise over the tipping culture here, which is very different from abroad. His favorite spot on campus is the basketball court as he loves to play the sport.

Jack, Connecticut
“Engagement”
Jack is a theatre major with a concentration in technical theatre, he enjoys the close knit community and the multitude of opportunities for members in the program. Jack shared that his favorite part about Salve was the location as there is plenty to do outdoors and he enjoys being in nature. He also shared that he took out bikes from the bike rental on campus and was able to ride them around campus. His favorite spot on campus, like many other seahawks is downstairs in Miley where he enjoys hanging out and playing pool with his friends.

It seems the new Seahawks are settling right into the Salve community; congratulations to all of us for making it through our first month of school, and good luck for the rest of the year!
