Transfer Students Happy at Salve

NEWPORT, R.I.-The seaside view, beautiful mansions, and cobblestoned downtown cannot be beat. Salve Regina’s picturesque New England campus is pulling in students from all over the United States.

This fall semester, students have transferred from the University of Maine, Worchester State College, and San Diego State University, to name a few.

At 9:40 a.m. Jazzman’s Café in O’Hare goes from the quiet conversations of few to the dull roar of many as classes begin to let out. With hands in pockets, purses and backpacks, students and professors line up to place their orders. Sounds of smoothies being made and milk being steamed into foam can be heard echoing throughout the room as a small crowd of customers wait for their personal concoctions to be finished.

Newport, R.I.- Jay Nippert, a Salve Regina University security officer, still remembers that day in 1988 when he was skateboarding in Freebody Park on Middleton Avenue in Newport. It was a sunny and warm day, the perfect conditions for skateboarding. As he was enjoying his skateboard a cop passed by Nippert, got out and ripped the skateboard out from under his feet giving him a ticket and a court date.

Students Overcrowd Library During Finals

It is not surprising to any veteran Salve student to experience extreme over-crowding at McKillop library during finals week and the week preceding it. Friends and classmates often need to plan ahead in grabbing a table before none are left. When times become so desperate, some students resort to taking advantage of the Newport Public library or even find some haunts downtown, like Empire, which often takes on extended hours for the Salve finals week.
