Best Buddies plan social communion

One of the newest university recognized student organizations on campus is the Salve Regina chapter of Best Buddies. Best Buddies is an international nonprofit organization that seeks to get rid of the stereotypes surrounding intellectual disabilities. On a rainy night this past April, Salve students and Newport area residents gathered in McAuley Hall to begin breaking down some of the social barriers between them.

As a celebration on the last day of classes, First Year Experience coordinator, Antonia Vouthounes, will be throwing a luau for all the first year students, their mentors and their advisors “in celebration of honoring the hard-work and dedication brought forth this year”.

Upon entering Ochre Court on the evening of Saturday, April 17, students were met with music, laughs, and shouts of “20…22…24…going, going, gone!” It was the second annual Sigma Phi Sigma Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction and the night was a great success.

Mark* was in the closet, enduring what some call Seven Minutes in Heaven at a junior high party. He was miserable. “Kissing this girl is disgusting,” Mark thought to himself, and he wondered why the other guys liked to do this. It was another seven years before he worked up the courage to come out of the closet.
