There is a new student group on campus and they want to bring political awareness to the Salve community. President, Brendan McQuade, and advisor, Sr. Virginia Walsh of the sociology department, lead the group Students for a Democratic Society (SDS).

Harold Mathews, property supervisor at the Elms, one of Newport’s grandest mansions, has battled the sea nearly every day for the past 20 years. The reason? The ocean is a large concern for all those who look after the Newport mansions, especially on warm days.

Musician Greg Wood performs as part of the Coffee House Series this Wednesday, Mar. 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Wakehurst Commuter Lounge.

Wood is somewhat different than the past singer/ songwriters that have performed at Salve this year because his musical style ranges from punk music to folk music.

In the first semester of the academic year, student Brendan McQuade founded Students for a Democratic Society, a student club that meets once a week to discuss candidates, elections, protests and more.

McQuade isn’t alone. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, political awareness among current college freshmen students rose for the third year in a row making political awareness the highest it has ever been.
