Letter to Mosaic Regarding Andy’s Resignation

TO: MOSAIC NEWSPAPER
FROM: SENATOR CONNOR SULLIVAN
SUBJECT: ANDY CIRIOLI III RESIGNATION
DATE: NOVEMBER 19, 2015

First, let me start this letter by acknowledging that this statement is not representative of the Student Government Association as a whole; it only represents my personal beliefs.

On Nov. 10th, President Cirioli announced his resignation as President of Salve Regina University’s Student Government Association after posting a quote that could have been perceived as racially sensitive. However, I know without a doubt, Andy never meant to disrespect anyone. I ask that we look at Andy’s record before making judgment; it shows his immense support for minority students on campus. It also shows the framework of the most inclusive administration we have had yet to date.

As president, Andy brought before the senate a letter supporting a diverse, multi-cultural curriculum; he created a multi-cultural committee and a diversity committee; he used a senate meeting for all of SGA to attend the United not Divided Dialogue; he was also in extensive talks with me, helping to create a multi-cultural capstone course; Andy is the school’s greatest asset when it comes to promoting diversity.

While I reluctantly accept Andy’s resignation, and am saddened by those who agree with his decision, I ask my constituents to use this moment to come together as a university, to continue Andy’s work of making meaningful changes to include people of diverse backgrounds, whether they are black or white, a minority or the majority. We have much work to do when it comes to being inclusive. But, I know with our current senators and with help from the entire student body, we can continue making progress and meaningful change.

Sincerely,
Senator Connor Sullivan
