Newport Talent Showcased at Open Mic Night

By Austin Bullock | Staff Writer –

The Wharf Pub at Bowen’s Wharf is hosting an open mic night every Tuesday from 8 p.m. until close to keep music performances alive in this historically musical city.

Since 1954, Newport has been the host of festivals featuring the best in jazz, folk, classical and rock music. Everybody from Miles Davis and Bob Dylan to the Violent Femmes and Ben Folds have played numerous times here in Newport but that is only during in the summer months.

The Wharf Pub keeps their open mic running year-round to satisfy the locals who love performing and experiencing great music in a laid-back atmosphere. Simply show up with your acoustic instrument, swing by the managers table to sing up, and enjoy the show until it’s your turn. Their huge beer selection certainly makes that easy.

Bruce Martin, a senior at Salve Regina, said “I play the open mic as often as I can. It’s fun to bring a few friends and play some music we all like…we always have a good time.” You can hear music ranging from Johnny Cash to The Neighbourhood and even some originals tossed into the mix. Performers can even get something knocked off their bill at the end of the night for participating in the event.

Many people say that the Wharf Pub’s open mic is the best and most reliable weekly music event in Newport but the only way to know for sure is to find out for yourself.
