Salve Women’s Rugby Keeps Making History With Trip to National Semi-Final

The Salve Regina Women’s Rugby Team is breaking EVERY ceiling and putting the program on the map as their historic season continues this weekend in the National Small College Rugby Organization Final Four.

Today, the ladies will be traveling to Marietta, Georgia for the National Championship semi-finals held at Life University. There will be a send-off rally at Rodgers Rec Center at 3:15 today to wish them safe travels and good luck as they look to top off their already unprecedented season with a national championship.

The Women’s Rugby Club began turning heads early in the season, but finally got a taste of the history books when they won their first ever Colonial Coast Conference title in a 63-14 win over Endicott college on November 3rd.

Their next opponent awaited them the following weekend in the Northeast Regional Championship match held in Schenectady, NY. Despite the cold air and muddy conditions, the Seahawks did what they set out to do and defeated Franklin Pierce in a 43-10 victory for the regional title.

After we send off our Seahawks they’ll be preparing to play The Catholic University of America in the second of Saturday’s games at 1pm. If they fall short, Salve will play for 3rd place on Sunday at 11am. But should they continue the winning momentum into the Championship match, the girls will play on Sunday at 1pm.

Salve comes into the final four as an underdog, which isn’t always bad. Since this is uncharted territory for the program, they have nothing to prove as they have cemented their legacy as Salve’s most successful women’s rugby team in history.

This is in stark contrast to reigning national champs Wayne State College, who will play their semi-final game on Saturday at 11am. If they beat their opponent Minnesota State University Moorhead, they will once again be in contest for the title. But if Salve hustles their way into the championship match on Sunday, you’ll want to watch the postgame award ceremony at 2:45pm to see them celebrate their season.
