The winners of Wake Up Wakehurst’s trivia contest enjoyed a fun night of food and prizes.

Imagine a gaggle of Salve students bundled in their North Face fleeces with hats and gloves, traipsing through the Rodgers lot to make their way into Wakehurst. The wind nips through every piece of their clothing and whips open the front door. Inside it’s not so cold. It’s warm and toasty but in every corner, there’s a surprise. By the fireplace lounge, students are relaxing on the rug or on the couches, intently listening to a trivia question being broadcast over a microphone. The smell of fried sugar fills the air as bags of mini donuts are set up on a table right outside the lounge. Any student can be found carrying a custom-made pillowcase. This heartwarming scene makes up the first event of the Office of Student Activities Friday Night Live series, Wake Up Wakehurst.

The evening’s activities did not end with trivia, donuts and custom pillowcases. A photo booth was available for any group of friends to have photos put on custom key chains and magnets. A breakfast bar was at the ready with waffles, fried potatoes, strawberry preserves, fruit and coffee.

The evening was mainly organized by Salve’s Director of Student Activities, Heather Barbour.

“Heather was very organized and very thorough,” said Catherine McHale,a junior and the Wakehurst building manager for the evening of Wake Up Wakehurst. “She’s very good at picking out what works and what doesn’t.” McHale said that Barbour is intent on selecting new events for students that they will be excited to attend.

McHale said that setting up for the event was made easy for her and for the other Student Activities work-study students, due in large part to Barbour’s organization of the event. They also only had to stay 35 minutes after the event was officially over to break down.

McHale also said that the food and activities went over so well to the point that there was very little food left over. The vendors who made the custom pillowcases ended up going through every pillowcase that was available to students. Teams of trivia participants were sitting toe to toe with each other.

The touchstone moment of Wake Up Wakehurst was the announcement of the artist to be featured at Salve’s Spring Concert. Salve freshman Justin Chale, a member of the Campus Activities Board’s concert committee, got on the microphone at 7:30 p.m. to help make the announcement.

“I’m used to being up in front of people, but it’s always fun to announce things like that,” Chale said. “Being on the committee is a lot of fun.”

Sam Adams of YouTube fame will come to Salve in April, known for songs including “I Hate College” and “Driving Me Crazy.” In addition, the band Five Times August will be giving a concert at Salve as part of the Friday Night Live series on Feb. 18.

“Anybody who’s anybody should be there,” Chale said of the spring concert.

Upcoming Friday Night Live events include a game show called “Minute to Win It” and a psychic fair.
