What’s New, Newport?

By Stephanie Menders | Managing Editor

Newport has become the home to nearly a dozen new stores this year, but visiting all of them takes time and money. So let’s narrow that list down to a couple must-visits for the semester. Here’s a closer look at some of the new stores and restaurants in the Newport area.

  1. Diego’s Bodega

Located in Middletown near First Beach, this bodega is a spinoff of downtown’s original Diego’s. The Bodega is a must visit for all fans of Mexican food. The small location offers an intimate feel as well as a selection of aioli’s, jams, and hot sauces for purchase. The prices are great, especially for the generous portions and superb taste. Easy parking can be found behind the building.

  1. Fat Face

This stylish shop filled the old Jack Will’s location on Thames Street. The environment is bright and welcoming and the staff is quick with a smile and greeting. The window displays are simple and lovely, just like their inventory. The price tag is a little high for a student’s budget, but it’s a great place for both men and women to blow a paycheck.

  1. Sephora

This is a big get for Newport. In certain Salve circles, the buzz surrounding Sephora’s impending Newport debut carried through last semester and the early summer. It’s signage and signature black and white interior is familiar to any make-up guru. Like most of the locations on this list, the shop is close to a trolley stop.

  1. TINA Stephens

If you’re in the market for mature or professional clothing, look no further. TINA Stephens opened up this summer in between Sephora and Francesca’s, making the Long Wharf shopping center your one-stop-shop. TINA Stephen’s frequently has great clearance and BOGO deals to help you amp up your collection for upcoming internships.

  1. Binge BBQ

Here’s a menu that will make any southern-cuisine lover salivate. Corn bread, pulled pork, beans, and coleslaw all made right in house. This new space blends right in with the style of Broadway while offering up some new flavors. This comfortable venue is perfect for a weekend dinner with friends.
