5 Ways to Turn Your Home into an Autumn Retreat

By Albert Vuoso | Arts and Entertainment Editor

It’s sweater weather in Newport and people are taking note. Apple-cider corduroys and snug cable knit sweaters can be seen on the road as locals crunch on the leaves that have fallen down Bellevue Avenue. As people dress to reflect the time of year, here at Mosaic we believe your home or dorm should do the same. Autumn is a great time to roll up the sleeves on an old oxford button down and add some much needed creativity to your pad.

Here are 5 ways to bring some of that colonial autumn charm in to your home:

GO MAGAZINE CLIPPING

Do more with your subscriptions this fall and use them for decoration and inspiration. Flip through a J.Crew catalog and clip out pictures of your favorite fall looks or themes. Turn their advertisements into artwork and neatly place the clipping into a picture frame. Hang the frame on a bare spot in your room or leave it on your desk for inspiration. If you find you have more clippings than picture frames – don’t fret. Use these left over pictures to pin on a cork board or to hang on your refrigerator.

BRING NATURE INTO YOUR HOME

Pumpkins and apples are a great way to invite color and fall in to your home. Use these fruits as accessories throughout your home. Place palm-sized pumpkins on top of door frames or place them on shelves throughout the house. The bright orange will surprisingly compliment many of the colors you already have in your house and look elegant when juxtaposed with a lush green houseplant. Have plenty of apples in your kitchen and display your abundance in a simple fruit platter. Your home will look full with fresh fruit and you may just inspire yourself to put an apple pie in the oven.

USE WARM COLORS

Driving down the narrow side streets of Newport will reveal electrifying colors that have replaced the mundane green leaves of summer. Capture these warm tones throughout your house to serve as the perfect back drop for your next gathering. Seek out pillows, throws and lamp shades that come in warm reds and oranges. Don’t be afraid to use white in your home either; it can add a classic, clean look when used against these warm tones. We find that camel brown paired with white makes for a truly autumn combination.

LAYER UP

Much like you would with yourself, layer up your home this fall to create a toasty feel. Take that warm colored throw and haphazardly drape it over your couch. On those cool days when the windows are still open, you’ll find yourself wrapped up in both a good book and the blanket. Layering the house can imply much more though. We think autumn is a great time to add to your collection of books. Gather all of the books from your house and layer the titles throughout rooms. This adds for a sophisticated feel and can be a great conversation starter.

CANDLES

Candles come in different colors perfectly adept for fall. Find warm fall colored candles and place them throughout your house. The bedroom, the living room and the bathrooms will become an autumn sanctuary perfect for relaxing. Find fall scented candles as well. Warm cinnamon or apple spice will greet your guests as they enter your house — reminding them just why your house is the best place to be this fall.
