A Red Sox Nation Mourns

This October will mark the second time in a little over a decade that the Florida Marlins have won a World Series. It will also mark the 85th year in a row that the Red Sox have not.

As disheartening as this statistic may be, it means nothing to the brave, hearty few that call the Sox their team. For me, this October will mark the 22nd year in a row I have said those five fateful words, “We’ll get ’em next year!” and I believe it this year just as much as I have every year prior.

We may have succumbed in the end to the “Evil Empire,” run by George “the anti-Christ” Steinbrenner, but anyone who watched that series cannot deny that the Red Sox proved once and for all that they are equal to the Yankees.

And that is the type of thing we Red Sox fans take solace in, the small things: Todd Walker batting .500 throughout most of the post-season, Jason Varitek’s immaculate skills as both a catcher and hitter, and Trot Nixon’s late-game heroics.

These are the things that will help the proud population of the Red Sox nation to work through this period of mourning. We are a strong breed, stronger than those who cheer for the pin-striped enemy, and because we know the agony of defeat, that is why when we do finally triumph over a team that clearly represents all that is wrong with capitalism and our society, the victory will be that much sweeter.

Until then though, we will remain proud, we will “Cowboy Up” and we will cheer for the Marlins who defeated the Yankees proving that good will triumph over evil, even in the form of a fish.
