Dating and Relating: A Systemic Look into Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships

By Tara Stanzione | Co-Editor-In-Chief

Sade Farquhar, senior psychology major, will be hosting an event titled “Dating and Relating: A Systemic Look into Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships from Various Perspectives,” on Tuesday April 5th at 7 p.m. The event, which will include guest speakers from both One Voice and Day One, will take place in Little Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Center, and it is open to the public.

“Sexual assault does happen on campuses, and they happen often. We are in many ways allowing victims to fend for themselves without the education that everyone deserves,” Farquhar said. “I find that a huge problem is that victims of assault are too self-conscious to believe that what has happened to them qualifies as anything worth talking about or labeling.”

Farquhar went on to say that the goal of having this important conversation is for the audience to have the opportunity to share personal experiences, learn from each other, connect to one another of a deeper level, and become more aware of the resources available for victims of sexual assault.

This conversation among peers will be one in which the audience can openly talk about what they look for in a relationship, what they believe makes a relationship healthy, and what they think are warning signs of being in an unhealthy relationship.

Guest speakers from One Voice will share their personal stories and experiences, while speakers from Day One, an advocacy group for domestic violence and sexual assault, will be speaking to the audience about their agency resources.

Speakers will be available to take questions at the end of the event and both a Day One spokesperson and counselor from Counseling Services will be available for private questions afterward as well. At the end of the program there will be handouts for the audience on both healthy relationship characteristics and warning signs of unhealthy relationships.
