Female Empowerment Organization Presents: The Empowerment March

By: Sarah DeWolfe | Co-Editor

This Saturday April 6th from 12-3 p.m. the Salve Regina Female Empowerment Organization is hosting “The Empowerment March” throughout the Salve campus with the main festivities happening on the Wakehurst Lawn.

The event is open to anyone in the Salve community who wishes to participate. There will be food trucks, speeches, performances, raffles, and tables from different Salve organizations throughout the afternoon. When the outdoor festivities are over, all are welcome to McKillop Library for a reception hosted by Women’s Resource Center Intern and Salve student Abby Wasylean.

The event, planned and brought to life by the all-female executive board, will feature inspiring keynote speakers including student leader Serena McHugh, SRU Mosaic advisor and Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies professor Donna Harrington-Lueker, and award-winning activist and Salve graduate Ashley Bendickson.

Performances include dances, poems, songs, monologues, and karate demonstrations from various clubs on campus. There will also be photography and artwork on display.

FEO President Kristen Medlicott is in just her sophomore year at Salve, with this being her first year as the organization’s president and first time planning the Empowerment March.

“I just can’t stop smiling when I talk about it, it’s just so exciting,” said Medlicott. “There’s so much stuff happening that it’s so important to realize that we’re all humans and if you just reach out and have a conversation with somebody it can make a world of a difference.”

On what she hopes people get out of  the event, Medlicott said, “I’m hoping that they get the message that we can all come together and it actually can work out because I feel like a lot of people on campus don’t get involved because they’re not interested or too nervous to and I hope people realize with just a little bit of motivation you can get so many people to come together.”

The Female Empowerment Organization will also be collecting toiletry donations at the march.

A statement from the FEO: We hope that this march will bring our Salve community together through the experience of motivational speakers, art, and performances from our fellow students.
