Pell Lecture: Welcoming Back Political Philosophy and Shakespeare

By Lauren Kane | Co-Editor-in-Chief –

“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; or close the wall up with our English dead!” These and many other famous lines spoken by in of literature’s most famous war plays, Shakespeare’s Henry V, will come to life at Salve mid-November.

There won’t actually be any bloody battles, but Henry V will be discussed in-depth as an upcoming lecture series. The Pell center is bringing acclaimed philosophical scholar Dr. Mark Kremer to present a two-part lecture, the first on November 15th from 4-6, and the second on Saturday morning from 10-noon.

Dr. Kremer’s lectures will offer a philosophical perspective on what is arguably Shakespeare’s most famous history play. Ultimately, Dr. Kremer will be arguing that Shakespeare uses Henry V to express the end of traditional Christian chivalry that had ruled previous to Henry V, and how it is replaced with more political notions of kinship and nation.

Dr. Kremer is Associate Professor of Political Science at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. This will be his second visit to Salve Regina University for a two-part Shakespearean lecture series. He came last semester to discuss Henry IV, and the political-philosophical implications of that play, leading up to Henry V. While that series could be seen as a precedent to the upcoming discussion, the lecture is not intended to be only for those who attended last spring. All are welcome.

Both lectures will take place in O’Hare 260. RSVP to the Pell Center as soon as possible, as seating is limited.
