Multicultural Week Is Here

By: Amanda Valentine | Staff Writer

Black History Month, Chinese New Year, Fredrick Douglass Day- there are many reasons to celebrate diversity in February, and Multicultural Education Week is the perfect opportunity! This week, Salve’s clubs and organizations are collaborating to recognize the many cultures of the world. There will be food, fashion, music, and prizes- this is not a week to miss. Check out the list below featuring panels and events happening all week!

Monday, February 25th, from 7-9PM in Bazarsky Lecture Hall: Opening Speaker

This week’s opening speaker is Bethany A. Johnson-Javois, who has spent over 15 years working to positively impact the lives of underserved populations. She is currently CEO of the St. Louis Integrated Health Network, focused on providing accessible care for all. She has garnered much recognition and appreciation over the years for her incredible work.

Tuesday, February 26th, from 7-9PM in Bazarsky Lecture Hall: LGBTQ+ Panel Discussion

Each season’s multicultural week provides an opportunity to explore a topic in depth through panel discussion, and this week’s topic is LGBTQ+ Experiences on a College Campus. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, learn, and promote a more open-minded and compassionate environment.

“The panel topic usually stems from a group of faculty and staff members, …they meet together and talk about what topic [is] prominent in today’s world, society, or campus itself,” said Rose Albert, Assistant Director of Multicultural Programs and Retention.

Wednesday, February 27th, from 7-9PM in Bazarsky Lecture Hall: ‘Three Sisters of Story’

Wednesday night’s play promotes open discussion and understanding as one Muslim, one Jewish, and one Christian woman come together to talk. Muslim storyteller Rohina Malik may be recognized by those who saw her incredible one-woman show, “UNVEILED” during last season’s Multicultural Week. She is joined this year by Susan Stone and Kim Schultz to promote peace.

Thursday, February 28th, from 2-4PM in Angelus Hall: Coffee House

If you have not attended a Multicultural Week coffee house before, be sure to come this Thursday. Half of Angelus is filled with a diverse array of treats, coffee, and tea, and the other half is filled with songs sung by the talented community of singers here on campus. Be sure to support your fellow Seahawks, as all different styles and languages are represented through music.

Friday, March 1st, from 7-Midnight in Ochre Court: Multicultural Festival

The grand front halls fill with celebration on this final night of the week. There will be diverse cuisine for the tasting, as well as many numerous dances and performances representing cultural traditions around the world. Many Seahawks will take part in a colorful fashion show.

“Student leaders come together to bring ideas and expertise in making the night a great night full of warmth, celebration, expertise and great diverse experiences,” said Albert.

Additionally, on Saturday night there will be a showing of “Greenbook” to close up the week, a movie that contemplates racial stereotypes and relations.

If you’re not sold yet, there will be prizes to win every day, so be sure to come by for your chance to win!

See you there!
