Mum’s the Word! : Fun Fall Activities To Do this Columbus Day Weekend

By: Emily Mikolay | Staff Writer

As most of us are aware, Columbus Day weekend is right around the corner. While we are all excited to visit home and reunite with some of our family and friends over the long weekend, there are some students who opt to stay on campus. Just because a few of your friends leave for the weekend though doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate the break here on campus and in Rhode Island!

Autumn is in full swing, so take advantage of some of the fantastic events occurring not only on campus, but in Newport and around the state this weekend. I’m sure you’ll not only get into the spirit of fall and Halloween, but you will also have an un-be-leaf-able time with your friends and family!

1. Halloween-themed Movie on the Lawn – Gerety Lawn

Salve is putting on a great event over the long weekend for any students staying on campus! On Saturday, October 8th from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Office of Student Engagement will be showing a Halloween-themed film for all students to enjoy. There will be free treats to snack on during the show, and the only thing you need to bring is something comfortable to sit on! Registration for the event can be made through the Corq App.

2. Downtown Westerly Ghost Tour – 44 Broad Street, Westerly, Rhode Island

If you are looking for a late night, spooky activity to do with friends, this is the event for you! Most of us know Westerly for its beautiful coastline and beaches, but there is actually much more eeriness to the town than most of us expect. On the tour, you’ll hear of the Devil’s visit to the town, the spectral light formed by one of the worst shipwrecks New England has ever known, as well as the frequent paranormal activity that occurs at some of Westerly’s most well-known establishments. The Downtown Westerly Ghost Tour runs from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday all throughout October. Tickets start at $25.00/person and can be found at the Seaside Shadows Website: http://www.sesideshadows.com/tickets

3. Afternoon Tea at Stoneacre Brasserie – 28 Washington Square, Newport, Rhode Island

Looking for a fancier way to spend the weekend? Stoneacre Brassiere is hosting an Afternoon Tea all through the month of October. Open 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday, you can book a tea for you, your friends, or your family to celebrate the long weekend or to just catch up together! Delicious tastes such as buttermilk biscuits with seasonal jams, macarons, and Heath-Bar brownies will be served, plus an array of even more delectable treats! Additionally, a kid’s menu is also available for any little ones who will be joining you for tea! Reservations start at $28.00/person and can be made on Stoneacre Brasserie’s website: http://stoneacrebrasserie.com/

4. Visit and Cheer On one of Salve Regina Sport’s Teams at a Home Game

If you happen to be around on campus for most of the weekend, numerous Salve sports teams will be playing home games that you can watch! Salve Women’s Tennis team will have a match against Curry College on Friday, October 9th at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are free for students with a valid Student ID! Additionally, Salve’s Field Hockey team, Women’s Soccer, and Men’s Soccer will also all have games over the long weekend. Check out Salve’s Calendar of Events Webpage for further details: http://events.salve.edu

5. Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular – 1000 Elmwood Avenue Providence, Rhode Island

Is there a more perfect way to embrace the autumnal atmosphere then by walking around a beautiful path surrounded by skillfully carved pumpkins?!? This annual event is a tradition for many Rhode Islanders, and something that you should definitely attend at least once in your life! The theme of the “pumpkin walk” this year is 75 years of television, celebrating some of the most popular shows in recent history! Pumpkins featuring carvings inspired from iconic shows like I Love Lucy, Looney Tunes, and Stranger Things will be featured at the event, along with countless more intricately crafted pumpkins! The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is open daily, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Timed-ticket entry is required, and can be purchased online at the Roger Williams Park Zoo’s website: http://www.rwpzoo.org/jols/

Happy Columbus Day Weekend, everyone!
