New Email Interface Surprises Students

There’s a new face at Salve…well a new interface for Webmail that is. Starting on Tuesday afternoon students, faculty, and staff began experiencing problems with their Salve email. You could log into your account and see that you had email but try to open, delete, or do anything within your account and you would be kicked out to the logon screen. Problems continued through Wednesday morning until Information Technologies (IT) was able to correct the trouble.

The department had been working with the new email upgrade since winter vacation and had planned to make the switch while students were away for spring break. “We tried to plan the transition to be smoother but when it crashed so close to spring break we thought ‘why resuscitate the old system?’” said Ty Brennan, director of IT.

Now when you type in the web address to check your Salve email you’re met with “Welcome to Horde” instead of the familiar “IMP.” This is in fact the same program just an upgraded version with a new interface (what you see when you look at your monitor – words, pictures, buttons, and menus that let you do things). Brennan said this version is an “enhanced product” that offers new features like mail filters, maintenance checks, and an email search function.

Many students expressed frustration and later confusion over the somewhat bumpy transition. “My teacher sent me an email about an assignment but I couldn’t get it [because of the system being down],” said Chrissy Ryan, a sophomore Spanish major, “I finally got the assignment before class and had to finish it last minute.”

Students should be able to breath a little easier as Brennan reassured that there are no more anticipated email changes in the near future.
