Newport Dressing 101: Winter Outerwear Essentials

By Mia Lupo | Fashion & Lifestyles Editor –

When the first snow fell earlier this week, it was a reality check for most us that winter weather is approaching fast! There was an article published earlier this semester about fall clothing essentials, but I thought it deserved some additional suggestions specific to New England’s tumultuous weather patterns. Here are the essentials every New Englander should have to prepare for the windy and wintry elements:

  1. Waterproof boots– Leather and suede boots are a fashionable fall staple, but unfortunately, they don’t perform well in all-weather situations. If leather or suede boots are not properly treated with weatherproof spray, they are subjected to water or salt marks.  Living in Newport, I would recommend having one pair of rain boots. There are stylish all-weather boots that can sustain rain and snow—check out Hunter, Sorel, or Sperry Top-Sider to get an idea.
  2. Windproof jacket– In addition to a classic wool pea coat, a sporty windproof jacket is another outerwear must-have. During a snow storm, windproof jackets are the obvious and most practical choice. Pea coats do keep in warmth, but when it’s windy, the cold goes through the wool fabric easily. Windproof jackets are not limited to sportier designs—in addition to ski jackets, Helly Hansen carries fashion-conscious parkas and down coats.
  3. Warm headgear – Whether its earmuffs or beanies or ski hats, the most important thing is that the hat covers the ears. Do not underestimate the warmth and comfort of a trapper hat—it may look over-the-top, but it is the best defender against strong gusts off the ocean and swirling blizzard winds.
  4. Chunky knit scarf-Underneath the weatherproof New England armour, scarves give the wearer to the opportunity to be cozy and creative. Pick a scarf that stands out of the crowd with either a graphic print or striking color.
  5. “Tech” gloves-In case you didn’t notice over the past few years, there are gloves that have touch-screen friendly fingertips, so now there’s no reason to take your gloves off while playing Candy Crush.
