Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Salve

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Salve students are being presented with lots of opportunities to educate themselves and take a stand on an issue that affects so many people of all genders. Below is a schedule of different events taking place on campus throughout the month of April raising awareness for sexual assault and its victims. The entire Salve community is welcome to participate.

Community Response: Technology”s Role in Human Trafficking

There will be a panel discussion on technology’s role in human trafficking sponsored by the Administration of Justice Club and moderated by Marrissa Ballard ’17 on Tuesday, the 18th, at 6 p.m. in Bazarsky Lecture Hall. The discussion will focus on how the Children’s Advocacy Center and Law Enforcement in Rhode Island are using technology to find victims, identify Johns, and arrest perpetrators.

Tables in Miley and McAuley

There will be awareness tables at all of the SRU Dance Show performances in Rodgers Recreation Center on Friday the 21st and Sunday the 23rd. These tables will have information about resources for those affected by sexual assault, pins to be worn to raise awareness, and a list of events promoting sexual assault awareness for the upcoming week.

Consent is Like Tea Tables 

On Monday, April 24th, there will be tables in Miley and O’Hare giving out free tea and information about consent from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. This table is based on the famous video that explains the idea of consent through a metaphor about tea. Check out the video here:

Denim Day Tables

To prepare everyone for Denim Day, there will be tables in  =Miley and O’Hare on Tuesday the 24th. Students can stop by and pick up some stickers, ribbons, and information about sexual assault.

Documentary Showing and Panel: The Mask You Live In

On the 24th there will also be a screening of the documentary The Mask You Live In and a panel discussion about the film in the DiStefano Lecture Hall in Antone Academic Center at 6:30 p.m. The documentary focuses on how men grow up and form their identities while navigating our culture’s narrow definition of masculinity. This event is sponsored by the Mosaic Student Newspaper, and the panel will include students, athletes, faculty, and representatives from Day One. 

Denim Day

Wednesday, April 26th is National Denim Day. Students, faculty, and staff alike are invited to wear denim to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with sexual assault victims.

Take Back the Night Yoga

On Thursday the 27th at 8 p.m., there will be yoga and meditation in the Wakehurst Fireplace Lounge. The yoga practice involved in this event is meant to give people a sense of comfort and control, and Dr. Martasian of the Psychology Department will serve as the instructor.

Sexual Assault Awareness March

To close the week, there will be a march around campus on Friday the 18th at 2 p.m. The march will begin at Rodgers Recreation Center. The march will focus on raising awareness about Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month in general. This event is sponsored in part by Salve Regina University and University of Rhode Island’s ROTC. Sergeant First Class Cornelius Wade will give opening remarks, and participants are encouraged to wear denim to this event.
