Studying Abroad, But Salve is Home

Maeve McCann | Staff Writer

Oftentimes I wonder how I got so lucky. Salve has provided me with so many opportunities to explore every facet of myself and make friendships that will last a lifetime. Next semester I am studying abroad, which is so amazing and I am so grateful I get the opportunity, but there are many things I am going to miss here at Salve.

  1. The people. At Salve I have been lucky enough to find a group of friends that I love so dearly and truly get me. That’s what everyone wishes for when going off to college. There is such a home-y vibe here and I honestly feel it wouldn’t be that way if it wasn’t for the people who inhabit it. Going to another country is exciting, but I can’t help but feel sadness for the friends I am leaving behind and how much I am going to miss them. The Salve community is so comfortable to me and I love being able to walk around campus and see friendly faces.
  2. The Cliff Walk has been a part of my Salve journey since the first day I got here. I have so many amazing memories on the Cliff Walk and it is such a special part of Newport. It is such a great place to unwind and take a break from the stressful life of a full time student. My friends and I will always hold a special place for it in our hearts. Although, I still haven’t done the entire thing, but that is on my bucket list before I graduate.
  3. The ocean views, of course. There is nothing quite like looking out the windows of O’Hare onto the ocean. A short drive off campus is Ocean Drive, which is another incredible view I will miss. Ocean Drive cures any and all of my problems, to be honest. It is a hotspot for a reason; you will always see people staring out, just amazed at the ocean. Seeing the ocean from the higher ground in Newport is also so cool and will never get old. Seeing all the cruises out on the water earlier this semester were really cool too.
  4. Drift Cafe acai bowls are absolute insanity. I just love the feeling of going to Drift on a Saturday or Sunday morning with your friends after a long week and just chatting. The sunset bowl is my favorite acai bowl of all time. It is an activity that I will never get sick of. If you haven’t tried the acai bowls from there, this is your sign. I will certainly miss strategically waiting for people to get up from their chairs just in time for me and my friends to steal it. Manifesting that they put more chairs in there.
  5. I have so many fond memories of downtown but specifically Bowen’s Wharf. Every year, my friends and I go to the tree lighting. We love going to the seafood festival, and some of our favorite restaurants are down there. Bowen’s Wharf is such a cute area in Newport and is hands down my favorite place to explore because I always feel like I notice something new whenever I am down there. I feel like every time I am downtown or talking about downtown someone mentions something that I haven’t heard of and want to check out. There is so much to do here and not just in the summer.

Honestly, there are so many things I couldn’t write about when it comes to the things I will miss here. In addition to all these amazing things I have to thank Salve for, I can’t wait to make more memories that I will be able to share. I am also going to miss the newspaper. I have made some great friendships through this club and it has given me the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals. Shoutout to Emma, Caitlyn, and Sam who have been a huge part of why I love going to Mosaic every week.
