In the past month, Rebecca Simmons has proven that nothing can get past her.

Simmons, a junior from Averill Park, New York was most recently named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Woman’s East Goalie of the Week. “I appreciate the acknowledgment from the league and Salve athletics,” said Simmons. “It is a great honor, but there are plenty of games left in the season and I am just focused on the next one.”

In a game against a very tough Neumann team, the score ended with a tie, 2-2. “She also followed that up with an impressive one goal game against Norwich, the no. 4 team in the country,” said Michael Cox, Head Coach of Salve Women’s Ice Hockey Team.

Although quite humble, Simmons has her head in the right place and goals of her own as she steps onto the ice this season. “I want our team to have a home ice playoff game and advance further into the DIII tournament,” Simmons said.

However, this season the team is facing the challenge of playing a very difficult schedule. So far they have played seven of the top 15 DIII teams in the country, and four of the top 10. “That is an impressive group of teams and I’d say we’ve handled ourselves quite well against those leagues,” said Coach Cox.

“We have a very strong team this year and we can accomplish a lot together,” Simmons added.

Simmons has been playing for the Salve Women’s Ice Hockey Team since her freshman year of 2008.

However, she has not always been a goalie. When she was younger she played out.

Simmons began playing ice hockey at the age of six. Having idolized her older brother, who was inspired to start playing ice hockey due to Disney’s Mighty Ducks Trilogy, Simmons joined the bandwagon and has stuck with the sport ever since.

Simmons has also been a competitor in speed skating.
